Talking the Walk

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:6-9

These words follow some of the most important instructions to the Jew. He wants them to remember but also to pass it on to the next generations. He gives instructions on how to do it.

MemorizeThese commandments are to be on your heart

Have we taken His words in so that they become a part of us? Does our mind go to His truth even when the words aren’t right in front of us?

As we absorb and integrate the words into our life, we are also exhorted to pass them on.

Teach your kids - Impress them on your children

Teach them by talking about them, as well as by example. Not just during chapel time or devotion time or even Sunday church – but all the time.

When you sit, when you walk, when you lie down and when you get up.

We shouldn’t need to have “spiritual conversations” because truth and scripture should just be part of our normal, everyday conversation. In that respect, every conversation is a spiritual conversation. Like the ants we talked about last week. It is integrated into our life and modeled that way for the next generation.

It’s also worth noting that when we teach someone else, it reinforces and refines our own learning as well.

Use symbols – Tie them as symbols on your hands

We’re forgetful and so God told us to create reminders. Keep it before you always, as a reminder. The symbol becomes a double-edged tool if it is publicly seen. It reminds you, but can also identify you to others. My life must be consistent to the chosen symbol.

Learning and memorizing is a muscle that needs to be exercised. And teaching your kids requires intentional effort. Keep watch and look around. What is in your path today that God can use to teach you or your children? Please, share it! Let’s learn together.
