Render unto God

Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. Mark 12:17

Several years ago at tax time I posted a blog entitled Render unto Caesar. A friend that works in the tax industry commented that it might be fun to come up with a God 1040 Form, in her words, “just to start to fathom what we need to render to God.”

I am reminded of the IRS joke with the 2-line tax form:

  1. What did you earn _____________.
  2. Send it in.

We could change that to:

  1. What do you have ______________.
  2. Give God the credit.

Only God should receive what is due to Him – honor, praise, and glory. Does He get rightful credit for my abilities and success, for new life, peace in troubled circumstances, for weaving our circumstances for good?

So, just for fun, here begins an itemized accounting. Please post your items as well.

God’s grace and mercy

Gift of sight and sound

Dogs

Pizza

A mission and vocation

Choices

Smiles and hugs

I need to be reminded every day that what I have has been given by God. Do I use my gift of hearing to listen to someone? Do I use the privilege of choices to make good ones that honor Him? Does He get credit when I succeed? Is my home used as a place of blessing and retreat for others? And a place of refreshment for me to recharge for the work of the kingdom? Is all that I own His, or just a tithe? Do I bless Him for the sunset? Is He the only recipient of my worship?

Render unto God…

Breath in the morning, heartbeat, legs to rise, eyes to see, ears to hear, sun that rises, ... God deserves credit and thanks for it all. Lord, I don't want to take credit for anything that belongs to you or dare to give it to someone else.
