Know thy God

‘“Know thy God” rather than “Know Thyself” is the categorical imperative of the Biblical man. There is no self-understanding without God-understanding.’

This statement from Heschel’s Prophet resonates with me, and yet I also find it rather counter-cultural for today, even within the Christian community. What do you think? Do you agree with Heschel?

Where do you spend the bulk of your energies – in knowing God? Or learning about yourself?

If the balance is towards self-examination, can I justify it if it is targeted toward becoming a better person?  Why or why not?

How can we as a church know God more intimately and not ignore areas of personal growth that need tackling?

For me the essence becomes - what predominates my thoughts – me? Or God? Unfortunately, the answer is usually me. When I am God focused, my own heart and mind become clearer as well.

And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever. 1 Chronicles 28:9

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! (Psalm 139:23)
